Stay Tuned!
Luce Peters is born on April 30, 1945—the day Adolf Hitler blew his brains out and his vile dictatorship crumbled. While the world marks the fall of a tyrant, for Luce, it’s the beginning of her own struggle under a new era of oppression. At fifteen, she’s not just navigating adolescence but also the profound stirrings of first love when she meets Anna. In the vibrant yet dangerous streets of 1960s Berlin, their connection grows, but in a place where expressing that love could mean imprisonment or worse, every moment they share is a defiant act of courage.
Anna becomes Luce’s safe harbor, the one place where she feels fully seen and understood. But their fragile world collapses on August 13, 1961, when an impenetrable wall rises overnight, cleaving Berlin in two—East from West, and Luce from Anna. Trapped inside East Berlin’s suffocating communist regime, Luce finds herself imprisoned both by the walls around her and the system that controls her every move.
Determined to resist, Luce dedicates her life to law, fighting for justice and freedom of speech. But in a world rife with spies, betrayal, and manipulation, she never knows who to trust. Then, during the 1972 Munich Olympics, a glimmer of hope emerges—an opportunity to escape and reunite with Anna. But can Luce risk everything for the chance at freedom and love? And if she leaves, will she ever return to the home that has become her prison?
"The Wall Inside" unfolds over three decades, as Luce’s journey for freedom, identity, and love is lived moment by moment. Inspired by the real-life experiences of my grandmother, my mother, and my own quest for identity, this novel is a deeply personal tribute to three generations of women defying societal restrictions, oppressive regimes, and their own internal struggles.
Walk alongside Luce as she fights for what matters most in a world that seeks to take it all away. This is more than a story—it’s a testament to love, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit to rise above even the most stifling constraints.
Ela Brumm is an East-German-born writer and chef who relocated to California in 2008. Growing up in the picturesque town of Neubrandenburg, she was shaped by the history and culture of her homeland, which deeply influenced her writing of The Wall Inside.
The seeds of the novel were planted by stories from her great-grandmother Luzi, who raised her son Klaus during the turmoil of World War II in Germany. This family history, rich with resilience and survival, became a foundation for Ela’s storytelling. Her parents, Veronika and Ruediger, who were both born in 1960 and lived under the repressive system of East Germany, also played a vital role in inspiring The Wall Inside. Their experiences, struggles, and eventual triumphs became Ela’s story too.
Ela’s own journey of self-discovery, particularly in exploring her sexuality, is a powerful force behind her writing. Her work is a testament to the pursuit of identity and love, themes that resonate throughout her novel.
Ela's goal is to bring The Wall Inside to a broader audience. She is currently seeking a publishing house and has aspirations to adapt the novel into a TV series, mini-series, or feature film.
